Lecture Programme 2009

All lectures begin at 2.30 pm unless stated otherwise and are held in Tenants Hall, Tatton Park.

Sunday 18th January  Dr Steve Furness, Alpine Plant Centre, Calver, Derbyshire.

“Sex Amongst The Flowers”.

Dr Furness is a lecturer, writer and ecological consultant who provides training for professional ecologists from Universities, National Parks, Local Authorities, the National Trust, Water Authorities, RSPB and a range of other trusts.  This lecture is an unusual talk, which is full of interest and humour and is fully illustrated by stunning close-up photography.

Sunday 22nd February Peter and Yvonne Holden, Springfield Nurseries, Blacko.

“The Campanula Family”.

Peter and Yvonne come to us after a busy 2008  during which Peter appeared on stage on four successive days at the Hampton Court Flower Show. They were at Tatton with the NCCPG and hope to be accepted in the future as holders of a Campanula Collection. This lecture deals with various aspects of the campanula family which is one of their specialisms at Blacko. Various plants will be brought to the lecture for demonstration and sale.

Sunday 15th March Lunch 12.00pm, Lecture 2.30 pm

Jacqueline Iddon, Hardy Plants, Bretherton.

“Location, Location, Location”.

In this lecture which follows our annual luncheon, Jacqueline Iddon, who has a vast experience in the giving of lectures to a variety of horticultural societies and garden societies, will deal with the choice of plants for different locations in the garden. She will draw on experience gained in her own garden which is open to the public from May to September each year. A range of relevant plants will be brought from her nursery for sale following the lecture.

Tuesday 14th April AGM 7.15pm, Lecture 8.00 pm.

Terry Morris, Terrysgladiolus, Oldham.

“Gladiolus”.

Terry Morris has many years experience in the culture of gladiolus. The  April timing of the lecture is excellent for the demonstration of  the preparation of the corms prior to planting.  Terry will carry out such a demonstration during the talk.

Sunday 25th October  Margaret Robinson, W. Robinson and Son (Seeds and Plants) Ltd, Forton, Preston.

“Vegetables For Taste And Flavour”.

This lecture will build on the realisation, which takes us back to the 1960’s, that “own grown” vegetables taste far better than those which are “shop bought”. The talk will include slides taken on the nursery during the changing seasons and will conclude with ones showing experiences gained during visits to the major shows at Chelsea, Malvern and, of course, Tatton.

Sunday 15th November Kevin Pratt, Hazel Grove.

“Unusual But Obtainable Plants”.

Kevin Pratt has a wide experience in the running of horticultural website companies gained over a number of years and has lectured extensively and exhibited at Chelsea and Holker flower shows. In the first half of 2009 he has 42 lectures booked which prove his popularity. This lecture will concentrate on unusual plants for the open garden and will indicate where and how they may be obtained.
